Why do we celebrate Memorial Day?
As we mentioned above, Memorial Day originally called Decoration Day. And commemorates those who died serving the U.S. military forces and or armed forces. While the holiday’s origins are not exact in the record, it did start after the Civil War.
In 1868, General John Logan sent out an official order or circular to the people which designated May 30th as a day of remembrance for those who died serving during the Civil War.
On the first Decoration Day, 20,000 graves at -Arlington Cemetery decorated, and future President James Garfield gave a speech.
By 1890, all northern states highly recognized Decoration Day -Memorial Day as a holiday. However, Southern states in the United States chose to honor those army men who died in the Civil War on separate days. These differences just continued until after World War I, when the holiday changed to honor Americans who died fighting in any war for the country, not just the Civil War only.
The Uniform Monday Holiday Act changed the date of Memorial Day from 30th May to the last Monday in every year’s May month.
This act or rule also established President’s Day on the 3rd Monday in February -formerly celebrated on 22nd February. And also, Columbus Day on the 2nd Monday in October -formerly celebrated on 12th October.
